In Canada, there are three main types of EV chargers:

  • Level 1 Chargers: Use a standard 120-volt outlet. They are the slowest, offering about 8 km of range per hour of charging.
  • Level 2 Chargers: Use a 240-volt outlet, similar to what you’d use for a dryer. They provide around 30 km of range per hour of charging.
  • DC Fast Chargers: Use direct current (DC) to charge an EV rapidly. They can provide up to 300 km of range in about 30 minutes.

The cost of installing an EV charger at home can vary based on several factors like the type of charger, installation complexity, and local regulations. On average, a Level 2 home charger installation can cost between $500 to $2,000 CAD, excluding the cost of the charger itself.

Yes, both federal and provincial governments in Canada offer various incentives and rebates to encourage the adoption of EVs and installation of home charging stations. For example, the federal iZEV Program offers rebates, and some provinces like British Columbia and Quebec also provide additional incentives.

Yes, in most cases, you will need a permit to install an EV charger at home, especially for Level 2 chargers that require electrical work. It’s important to consult with a licensed electrician and check local regulations before installation.
